NACSM Ad Hoc Committee Strategic Plan
Summary*
(accepted by Chapter Executive
Committee March 2003)
Section A.
Leadership
o
Create
and distribute a "Leadership Handbook" to include: mission statement,
constitution, by- laws, and general responsibilities associated with executive
board offices. Suggestions: delegate responsibilities to board members.
o
Establish
a leadership development program, retain and expand. Suggestions: have
prospective state reps and board members do something before serving on the board,
explore other more formal approaches to prepare prospective candidates for
board offices.
o
Provide
members the opportunity to serve in leadership roles. Seek out persons to serve
as leaders in the chapter. Suggestions: invite new professionals to work with
current board members, include interest forms with registration materials, have
current board members contact new professional members in their state, develop
a web form.
Section B.

o
Provide
more incentives to maximize student participation in the chapter. Suggestions:
have undergraduate representative serve on the board, create an undergraduate
council with 1 undergrad from each state, separate undergraduate vs. graduate
research awards, create web links for chapter graduate
programs.
o
Plan
to have the spring tutorial meeting for students, and the fall meeting with a
scientific focus on a topic with broad appeal.
o
Routinely
provide CEU and CMU credits for attendance at meetings. Note problem with CME's because it takes 8 months
to obtain approval through AMA
o
Work
in concert with other organizations to increase membership i.e. AAHPERD, AMA, ASEP , NSCA.
o
Increase
involvement of clinical medicine professionals by word of mouth, flyers, and
newsletters.
o
Establish
list-serves (with names, addresses, phone numbers ofpast,
present, future NACSM members) for each state in the Northland Chapter to
regularly communicate chapter information.
o
Establish
an online NACSM membership form available at the chapter's website.
Section C. Financial
Objectives
o
Increase sponsorship and support money.
o
Establish a scholarship
or tuition supplement fund to encourage exchange student researchers, both in
the US and overseas.
Section D. Programming: Education, Research, and Service
o
Use
the internet, list-serves, and on-line newsletters to do some of our educating.
o
Obtain
permission to post speaker presentations (Power Points) on the chapter webpage following chapter meetings.
o
Obtain
permission to videotape presentations made at chapter meetings that may have
educational benefit to the membership.
o
Establish
a chapter speaker's bureau
o
Publish
all award winning abstracts from the spring tutorial meeting on the chapter webpage.
Section E. Communication
o
Promote
the chapter webpage as the principal source of
information for communication with the membership i.e. it should be listed on
all communications, mentioned at chapter meetings, and promoted by members of
the executive board.
o
Establish
statewide list-serves to facilitate communication links between state reps and
chapter members within a given state. This may be particularly helpful in
promoting region specific events such as lecture tours, and can provide a link
to establish a common database within the chapter.
o
Send
chapter-wide list-serve messages to remind members of future meetings and
important deadlines i.e. research proposal and membership dues deadlines.
Section
F. Organizational
Relationships
o
Use networking through chapter members and members of the executive board to work with related organizations
to communicate announcements for chapter meetings.
