NACSM COLLEGE QUIZ BOWL
TEAMS AND FORMAT:
1. Teams will consist of 3 undergraduate students
representing institutions from the Northland Chapter of the American
College of Sports Medicine. Each institution can enter up to 2 different
teams.
a. Each team member must be a member of the Northland Regional Chapter ACSM at the time of the competition. b. Each
team member must be a full time undergraduate student enrolled in a
degree program that would qualify for ACSM Professional Membership at
the time of the competition. c. Team must be sponsored by an NACSM
Professional Member or Fellow who is a faculty member at the
institution. An eligible sponsor may sponsor no more than 2 teams for a
competition. d. In the event that a student team member is unable
to participate in the competition, it is permissible to substitute
another student from the same institution if they meet the
aforementioned criteria. Substitutions must be approved by the
sponsoring faculty member and the emcee prior to the start of the
competition."
2. There will be a judges table with 3 judges
(University/College Faculty members representing the Northland Chapter
of the American College of Sports Medicine).
3. There will be 1 scorer for each team. Team scorers will indicate correctness of answer and bring challenges to the judges.
4. There will be 1 timekeeper for the event keeping track of time intervals for each question.
5. There
will be an emcee for the event who will ask questions, confirm answers
and prompt scorer to credit each corresponding team with the right
number of points.
6. Scoring is done electronically using a
spreadsheet. Scores are continuously updated and displayed for the
audience. Team sponsor must immediately notify emcee in the event an
error is observed.
QUESTIONING:
1. The competition will be a Jeopardy-style format.
2. Each team will have an equal chance to answer each question by writing the answer on a whiteboard when called by the emcee.
3. Every
team answering the question correctly would receive the designed points
identified with the chosen question. Teams will have 15 seconds from
the time a question's reading by the emcee is completed to display a
written answer on their answer board.
4. The questions will be
asked in 3 rounds- Jeopardy, Double Jeopardy and Final Jeopardy. For
Final Jeopardy, team will be required to state their wagered/risked
amount prior to hearing the question. Their final score will be raised
or lowered by the wagered amount depending on if they get the question
correct or incorrect.
5. Three (3) judges will confirm answers
and interpret answers in the event of ambiguity. They will discuss and
decide as a group and rule with one voice. Judges decisions on an
answer's correctness will be based on

6. Content will address the following broad areas:
i. Metabolism ii. Pulmonary iii. Skeletal muscle iv. Nutrition v. Testing and prescription vi. Body composition vii. Work and Energy viii. Cardiovascular ix. Biomechanics x. Anatomy xi. Physiology xii. Exercise physiology
ENTRY PROCEDURE
1. Team must be entered by email dated September 30, 2011
2. The faculty sponsor must send an email with the students names to Dr. Mark Blegen, FACSM. The email must Indicate for each student on the team:
a. name and email address b. major c. academic standing (junior, senior) and expected graduation date d. NACSM membership expiration date (click here to check for membership info, recent additions are displayed under the heading "RECENT CHANGES" e. team name (for example Central State University Team #1)
TROPHY and AWARD
The winning team will receive a permanent plaque for their
school and will possess a trophy cup for 1 year. The winning team will
also be sponsored by the Northland Regional Chapter to represent it at a
National ACSM Quiz Bowl to be held at the ACSM Annual Meeting in San
Francisco, CA , May 29-June 2, 2012 . This sponsorship may be contingent
on National ACSM support of the event. If the National ACSM holds the
competition, then Northland Chapter will make a substantial contribution
towards lodging and travel involved in having the winning Northland
team representing us in San Francisco. There may be some expense to
participants and to schools of the team for meals and incidentals.
